All assignments and timesheet has been completed, and posted. Throughout this course it was great to be introduced to so many different aspects, duties and responsibilities of an Athletic Director at the High School level. My mentor was alway's present and willing to answer any questions that I may have had through the course. The ability to multi-task and wear many different hats is critical within this role. Andrew seems to have a sound grasp on this characteristic his communication, organization and attention to detail is pretty evident in his day to day dealings. I was extremely please with this whole experience and I look forward to continuing our working relationship through and beyond this upcoming calendar school year. Andrew exhibited sound communication skills, he seems to have all the traits necessary of being an outstanding Athletic Director. Thankful for the opportunity he has afforded me through this course. -Coaching Thursday's practice simply a walk through in prep for the scrimmage that we concluded yesterday. This week was the first week, we began to cover all special team coverages, punt, kickoff, kick return & PAT. Been difficult getting depth charts aligned due to the inconsistency of attendance from day to day from the student athletes. As an staff we are looking forward to school starting, we feel that over the summer it's been challenging getting everyone to practice daily due to the students individual transportation opportunities at home. We as an staff are looking to see if this will improve once school starts. Yesterday, was the final scrimmage in prep for the season opener. We won 28 - 8. Again, due to absences we did not have very good numbers, many student athletes were burdened with having to play both sides offense and defense. We had to continually shuffle kids in out all throughout the scrimmage if it wasn't due to cramping, it was to give some kids a breather from playing on both sides of the ball. The one thing that i'm extremely proud about was that the kids sucked it up and did what was needed to help the TEAM. The communication amongst the team was very positive which was also great to see, hopefully we can continue to build on this as the season continues. Now, I believe the kids understand the importance on conditioning as well. I've been trying to preach this to the team, now after concluding out 1st full 4 qtr scrimmage, the kids now understand the importance of making sure that they are in better shape to keep peek performance in the ladder qtr's of the game. Overall, I was pleased with the unselfishness of the kids doing what was needed to compete and ultimately win the game. Now we get geared up for a full week of practice, in prep for our 1st real game of the season against Summit Country Day next Friday. The 2021 football season is finally here. -Final Thoughts Would just like to personally Thank Tiffin University for allowing myself back into the University and affording myself the opportunity to complete this Sport Mentorship course. I'm so grateful and appreciative of all the parties involved in this decision. Thank you Dr. Goeb for having an open door policy, you were always there to clarify any questions that I may have had throughout this course in a timely manner. Good luck to all my classmate's on your journey and careers in the future to come, wish everyone well and congratulations on getting thus far in your MBA courses. Good luck to everyone and continue striving for your dreams and aspirations in life!

At this moment in time, the main focus has been brushing up documents and finalizing assignments in preparation for submittal. Andrew provided some positive feedback on the whole mentorship experience and insight on ways to focused and career driven upon the completion of this course. -Coaching This week of preparation for our 2nd upcoming scrimmage Friday has been challenging to say the least. We've had coaches, along with the reassuring theme of athletes missing practices here and there as well. Today we took off the shoulder pads and allowed the kids to only wear helmets, jerseys and pants due to the humidity outside. Today, I learned that one has to motivate kids in different ways to maximize focus, determination and effort from certain kids. Discipline and organization are some of the areas that I made intentional for the kids today. I challenged star players to step up their game and become more of leaders for their teammates. A lot of times I've witnessed that some are really trying their best to lead orally, but at times the messages just come across in a unpleasant manner. I've tried explaining to the kids that, "its not more of what you say, but its more how you say it" that may be interpreted in an incorrect manner. Some took well to the challenge, other's did not, buts o.k. its o.k. to ruffle some feathers from time to time to combat complacency in my opinion. Tomorrow will be the last day of practice before the 2nd scrimmage of the season Friday, I'm a bit concerned due to the lack of execution and lack of focus I've witnessed this week in practice so far. I have complete faith that once the whistle blows our kids will respond. We will continue to plug away and love and coach on them until its all said and done. Really starting to focus on more life lessons than X's and O's these days. The kids seem to need that a bit more for life after football. -Mentorship
We have a set date for tomorrow Tues 8/10 to complete the Individual Career Development Plan. Look forward to working through this assignment with Andrew, excited to gain wisdom from his replies and comments. It was good to see Andrew in the stands at the scrimmage to support the program Friday. After the scrimmage we had to work a fund-raiser in the city. The Cincinnati Peddelfest, was a great experience set up by Andrew. It was great getting out an observing the kids building chemistry and working together for a great cause. The volunteers and kayak riders were all so thankful and appreciative of the kids efforts, and so was I. Community Service is very important to me, look forward to many more outings of this nature in the near future. -Coaching Friday 8/6 was the team's 1st official scrimmage of the season. It was my first experience putting on the head set as an High School football coach. Overall, I was borderline please with specific areas of team. Other areas of the team, not so much, to be more specific the Offensive Line struggle a bit with recognizing defensive fronts and pressures from the linebacker level. We had a few free-runners coming through the line of scrimmage at times, we were just fortunate enough that we have really exceptional athletes at our skilled positions that kind of covered for the miscues that we may have encountered on the OL. Today, at practice we had an opportunity to watch film, and give constructive criticism. I've found that in many cases kids are only really concerned with watching their positive plays, its been a challenge to help them not only focus on the good, but to also give the same amount of attention to the areas that needs improvement. As a coach, I feel that the envelope needs to constantly be pushed to assist the athletes in working on areas that needs improvement for the greater good all parties envolved, the team, coaches and the individual player's themselves. This will be another huge week of preparation, this Friday we will have our second scrimmage of the season against a tough Norwood High School football team. -Mentorship
The Individual Career Development Plan has been discussed with Andrew, we plan to have a face to face early next week to compete this assignment. Look forward to Andrew's answers from the questions on the plan. -Coaching Intensity and focus has heightened over the last couple of days during practice. Yesterday was the first practice in full pads. Today, we held an inter-squad scrimmage. Had a great chance to observe the level of physicality from the kids. There has been some good and there has also been a lot of that needs to be improved. Tomorrow is our 1st scrimmage against an opponent for the season. It will be a great opportunity for the kids to show what they have to offer to their teammates and their position coaches as well. As an staff, we are continuing to learn each other. Feel that we as coaches are getting more familiar with one another. There's a lot of complementary coaching from my perspective, we get along well on and off the field and I believe the kids can feel that as well. Communication has been great, and look to continue this trend. The kids are giving great effort, still has a little way's to go from an technique standpoint, we'll get there. The scrimmage tomorrow will be a great opportunity to evaluate film, and coach kids up on what they did well and need to continue doing, and also areas of their game where they need to improve. -Mentorship
Today, we continued discussion about scheduling. Andrew did a great job walking me through step by step to see the actual steps needed to coordinate transportation to our upcoming scrimmage Friday 8/6. Andrew also went over the process of scheduling officiating for the scrimmage, and how much money is paid to each official. -Coaching Today, was an offensive day, we focused in on the run game specifically. We have been experiencing some inconsistencies with attendance in particularly with our offensive lineman. From day to day, we at least have 2 kids a day missing form practice. This has been a major concern for myself and the remaining staff members, the offensive line is the most important when it comes to continuity, we are constantly having to adjust and move pieces accordingly, pending attendance. Been a challenge for the simple fact that kids aren't able to just focus in on one position at a time, instead we are shuffling accordingly, in result making it more complicated to get familiar with their intended position. ------------------------------------------ -Mentorship Mon. 8/2 The main focus was getting the rest of the coaching staff finished up on their coaching certs. Andrew has expressed some concern in regard to an coaching cert audit that's quickly approaching at the conclusion of this week. Personally I am all up to date and current on all required coaching certs, just waiting to complete my FBI and background check. -Coaching Mon. 8/2 was one of our poorest practices to date. The kids looked extremely lathargic and had very low energy. Head Coach Mobley was extremely disappointed in the effort and execution of practice. At the conclusion of practice we had a coaches meeting where Coach Mobley expressed specifically what he wanted to have changed and expectations moving forward. I learned through this practice, that even when you do not have your best output at practice, find little ways to win small battles throughout practice for individuals to work on. -Mentorship
Today, I was able to complete the last coaching certification needed for my mentor. Pupil Permit, completed this process. Outside of the certs, the very last request I have to complete is to head over to the School Board to compete my background check. Other coaches on staff are also nearing the completion of their certs as well. My mentor seemed to be delighted for the progress made on this matter. Throughout this process, I've learned to become a bit more proactive in meeting deadlines and getting things done in a more expeditiously manner. -Coaching Today's practice was our best practice since coming aboard to assist this staff of coaches. This was great to see, with the understanding of things went with our coaching meeting after practice Mon. As a staff, i felt that we responded well to coach Mobley's request to become more efficient, detailed and organized in regard to our practice plan and overall execution of practice. The offensive coach changed up our practice routine today, and it paid huge dividends in my opinion. Practice ran very smooth and coherent, was nice to see. The kids responded well, giving great effort and energy. We made progress today as a team, look to continue on this path. -Mentorship
Today the entire coaching staff has been requested to get the certs completed and emailed to Andrew ASAP. Personally, I still have a couple certs left to complete. Plan on emailing what I have completed so far and complete the other two certs needed this week. The team is scheduled to have our first full scrimmage next Friday 8/6. Coaches will not be able to participate without all certs completed. -Coaching Today was a step backwards in terms of crispness and sharpness of practice. Not sure if it's due to a bad case of the Monday's or what. Coach Mobley expressed his concern for the lack of progress as an staff in regard to execution of practices. As the WR coach, the wide outs were not the focus of coach's concern, but as a staff we are all one working together for a common goal, so if coach point's out 1 unit per say, he might as well be pointing us all out. Coach Mobley really reminded me of not coming complacent, to always check the temperature of not only the players, but ourselves as coaches as well on an daily basis. I learned that even when you might feel that coach isn't paying close attention, he is! This is our 1st year together for many coaches on the staff, we have to continue to work together and pick each other up when needed, we need to continue to work on our chemistry as an staff. Wednesday practice will be much better, efficient and effective. Look forward to taking today as a learning lesson and building from here on out. Let's see how this progresses. -Mentorship
On Thursday 7/22, the key focus was to assist all newly hired coaches with the needed requirements to wrap up their coaching certifications. Andrew stressed the importance of getting this all wrapped fairly soon. Provided the staff with ea specific cert that is needed along with the websites addresses to have them all completed. -Coaching Thursday practice went well. We practiced 7 on 7 on the field. The teams energy was great, last practice for week. Prior to practice, the staff had a very focused conversation about moving a few kids to different positions. What I learned throughout this conversation is the "How, and why" to express the moves to kids exactly. Head Coach Mobley did a greta job expressing the "How, and why". Mobley expressed that's its important not make the student athlete feel as if the decision was a demotion, but instead have the athlete focus on other aspects of his game that could be utilized for the benefit of both the kid and the team. I learned how one could interpret as a negative and turn it into a positive for all parties involved. Felt that Coach Mobley did an excellent job formulating the plan, and identifying exactly how he was to execute the plan. The athlete took to the position change during practice with a positive attitude. All do to the technique and approach that Coach Mobley adopted and executed. The athlete understood the how and why, he understood that the decision was in the best interest of everyone involved, himself, the coaches and his teammates as well. -Mentorship
Today Andrew and I discussed the key responsibilities of both scheduling and Tiering. Scheduling: Communicating with other local high school AD's to confirm time and place for contest. Confirming officials, to ensure that they arrive to games on time. To ensure that transportation is confirmed to and from contest as well. Tiering (Competitive balance): based on where kids live in a multi-school district, they are to be tiered in different categories to determine what division that individual sport will compete in the Ohio High School athletic association. After spending time shadowing Andrew, it has become evident of the many hats that one has to wear in order to be the head of several athletic programs within an school. It's been very exciting to learn more about the daily functions and responsibilities of an AD. -Coaching Today, was a very productive and efficient day. Kids were flying around making plays all practice. Had to get the kids focused a bit during the weight room session today. A few kids felt like they wanted to joke around a bit more than usual. After a firm conversation, I was happy to observe how well they took to coaching. They refocused and we went along to have a really good practice. One of the things, that I've learned today on the field is that we may have to find other positions for some of the kids we have slotted in their current roles. A few kids have been struggling individually for some time now, just now realizing that they may be suited for a different position. It's our responsibility as coaches, to place the kids in a position to where they can thrive and grow as players. -Mentorship Today, I was able to complete 85% of my coaching certs assigned by my mentor. Received certifications for CPR, First Aid, Health and Safety, Concussion, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Covid-19 certifications. The kids are making strides in getting their final forms completed and turned in. The goal is to have my certs all completed by this weekend, then begin the next assignment by my mentor - Andrew. -Coaching No Practice today! ------------------------------------------------------- -Mentorship Yesterday 7/19, I was reminded that the coaching certs need to be completed by my mentor. August deadline is quickly approaching. We were able to go into the database and update records of kids turning in their paperwork for final forms and physicals. -Coaching Yesterday 7/19 was a good day for Hughes Football. Typically on Monday's the energy level's are at times low. Not yesterday, the kids had great energy during our weight lifting session. We also passed out equipment to the kids yesterday, one could easily sense the eagerness and excitement for practicing with the pads soon. It was good to observe the excitement and positive body language for upcoming practices. As an staff, we will now begin to observe which kids are able to separate themselves and begin solitifying reps throughout the early camp season. Yesterday, it dawned upon myself that I need to make sure that I'm documenting and being as prepared for practice ahead of time, to ensure both effective and efficient practices from here on out. |
